Looking for a new van with an automatic gearbox? Leasewell looks at the best models on the market in 2020.
If you are looking for an automatic van, then choice is better than ever before, there are not just conventional diesel vans for sale with an automatic transmission, the growth in the electric van market has added even more models for us to consider.
If you are looking to purchase an automatic diesel van, the likelihood is that you will have to pay a bit more for the privilege. Automatics are only usually offered at the top of the van range either with a high-spec trim level or powerful engine. As well as costing you more to begin with, automatic vans will also cost you more at the pump as they are not quite as efficient as their manual counterparts. Therefore, it is important to weigh up whether the added convenience and ease of use associated with an automatic transmission outweighs the extra costs.
Electric vans replace any sort of conventional transmission with direct drive. As they are powered by an electric motor, with instant torque from zero revs, they do not require conventional gears to power the front wheels of the van. These obviously will not cost as much money at the pump as their diesel counterparts, however they will usually cost more upfront and there are always the charging costs to consider.
So, which automatic vans should you consider? Here are 5 of the best!
Best automatic vans for sale
The Mercedes Sprinter large van benefits from Mercedes’ passenger car knowhow when it comes to automatic transmissions. The automatic option is a 9G-Tronic nine-speed gearbox, which is an incredibly smooth shifter which can comfortably cope with hauling heavy loads. The auto is an optional extra across the Sprinter van range, meaning that even the most efficient front-wheel-drive Sprinter van can be had with an automatic gearbox.
The Mercedes Vito is unique in the medium vans market in that the automatic transmission is more common than the manual alternative through the range. Rear-wheel drive Mercedes Vito vans get the automatic gearbox as standard, whilst the front-wheel drive Vito is manual only. You can also only get the manual transmission on the progressive trim level, meaning the auto is standard on higher spec Premium and Sport crew van models. The Vito gets the same 9G-TRONIC auto box as the larger Sprinter van, which feels incredibly smooth on the road.
Not ready to go for the fully electric Citroen Dispatch, Peugeot Expert or Vauxhall Vivaro van? The automatic diesel models are amongst the very best for sale in the medium vans market. Like Mercedes, the PSA medium vans take technology from their passenger car ranges for their automatic gearboxes, the gearbox of choice is the EAT8 automatic found in cars such as the Citroen C5 Aircross and Peugeot 3008. The EAT8 auto is available with the most powerful engine in the Citroen Dispatch van range, the 180ps model as is the only transmission available with this engine type, it is also only available in top spec models (Driver on the Dispatch).
Renault Kangoo ZE
If you are looking for an automatic small van then choice is limited, however one very good option is the all-electric Renault Kangoo ZE. Its highly likely that small van drivers will be doing mainly short local journeys, so it may be worth considering going electric. Under the skin you will find the same running gear as the Renault Zoe, meaning an impressive range of up to 160 miles, the direct drive also means instant acceleration without rowing the gears.
Whilst the Mercedes Sprinter allows you to add the automatic gearbox to any model, the VW Crafter only has a handful of automatic options: the 140ps or 177ps versions of the brand’s 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine, there’s also the option of 4MOTION four-wheel drive on the latter option. The transmission is a good shifter and promotes efficiency by being an 8-speed unit and can be specified with any van layout (there are three van lengths and three heights available), with the four-wheel-drive option adding even more choice. The auto box is available in Startline and Trendline specifications.
