Top 10 new vans of September 2020

10. Peugeot Partner

Originally one of three almost identical small vans which claimed the prestigious International Van of the Year 2019 prize shortly after joining the market, the Peugeot Partner, Citroen Berlingo and Vauxhall Combo clearly have a recipe for success, so much so that there’s now a fourth van based on the same platform in the form of the Toyota Proace City van. The Peugeot Partner has been a large part of the small vans market for more than two decades, however the new model sets a new benchmark in the market, offering class leading payloads as well as excellent levels of comfort and build quality. 1,810 new Peugeot Partner vans were sold in September 2020.

9. Ford Transit Connect

The largest of three small Ford vans for sale, the Ford Transit Connect is everything you would associate with a Ford Transit van in terms of reliability and build quality albeit in a much smaller package. There is also a surprisingly generous level of choice available with the Ford Connect, including two wheelbases, petrol and diesel engine options, manual and automatic transmissions and four generously equipped trim levels. 1,952 new Ford Transit Connect vans were sold in September 2020.

8. Citroen Berlingo

See ‘Peugeot Partner’ above. As mentioned previously, the Peugeot Partner, Citroen Berlingo and Vauxhall Combo vans are pretty much identical in terms of build and dimensions, the Citroen Berlingo has always been renowned as an excellent small workhorse, however this new model is so much more than that. There are four trim levels designed with different types of van drivers in mind and the latest technology available including an overload indicator which warns you when you are close to reaching the van’s maximum payload and no fewer than 20 driver assistance features. 2,139 new Citroen Berlingo vans were sold in September 2020.

7. Vauxhall Combo

Taking the bragging rights for the PSA trio of small vans in September 2020 is the Best of British Vauxhall Combo. Since joining forces with the Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Partner the Vauxhall Combo has achieved uncharted levels of success, winning an abundance of awards along the way including WhatVan? LCV of the Year 2020. The Combo which previously shared a platform with the Fiat Doblo Cargo, always boasted one of the highest payloads in the small van market, however it has certainly reached new levels since joining with the PSA pairing. 2,180 new Vauxhall Combo vans were sold in September 2020.

6. Mercedes Sprinter

A large van synonymous with quality, Mercedes vans have labelled the Sprinter van as the most adaptable large van on the market, as well as the most intelligently connected van the world has ever seen. Quite the billing, but it is difficult to argue, with one of the best levels of standard specification in its segment, including a host of the latest driver assistance technologies and telematics features. 2,337 new Vauxhall Combo vans were sold in September 2020.

5. Vauxhall Vivaro

The British built Vauxhall Vivaro van is more comfortable and generously equipped than ever before and uses the same platform as the Citroen Dispatch, Peugeot Expert and Toyota Proace medium vans. Popularity of the Vivaro van has surged since the new model has joined the market and it’s not hard to see why, with a more economical, comfortable new van with the ability to carry heavier loads than previously. 2,825 new Vauxhall Vivaro vans were sold in September 2020.

4. Volkswagen Transporter

An iconic medium van, the VW Transporter has been a massive part of the new van market for more than six decades, with its popularity showing no signs of waning. The Transporter has recently been facelifted and now wears the T6.1 badge, boasting more technology and features as standard. There is also the addition of an all-electric drivetrain for the very first time with the Volkswagen eTransporter. 2,937 new Volkswagen Transporter vans were sold in September 2020.

3. Ford Ranger

The only pickup truck on the list is the iconic Ford Ranger, which has also recently been facelifted with a modified front grille and the introduction of more economical 2.0-litre diesel engines. The new Ford Ranger also features a raft of the brand’s latest safety technology, whilst another special edition Ranger pickup has also recently joined the range in the form of the Ford Ranger Thunder. 3,744 new Ford Ranger pickups were sold in September 2020.

2. Ford Transit

The biggest van in the comprehensive Ford vans range, the Ford Transit has a lifespan of more than five decades and still one of the most popular new vehicles on our roads today. The Transit van is synonymous with quality and is one of the most practical vans on the market with numerous lengths, heights, and configurations available. The Transit van is so popular that the only van to beat it to the top of the charts last month is also technically a Transit, its little brother, the Ford Transit Custom. 3,764 new Ford Transit vans were sold in September 2020.

1. Ford Transit Custom

The most popular new van in the UK market for as long as we can remember, the Ford Transit Custom is a fantastic all-rounder which offers excellent load carrying capabilities as well as a car-like driving experience behind the wheel. The Custom appeals to a host of different types of tradespeople and sold more than twice as many as any other new van last month.
