Ford vans launch Transit Active and Trail models

Ford Transit Trail

When it comes to the new van market, Ford vans certainly lead the way, in fact the three best-selling new vans of September 2020 were all Ford vans. However, they are certainly not resting on their laurels and have now added Active and Trail specifications to the Ford Transit Custom and Ford Transit van ranges.

New Ford vans

Ford Transit Custom Active

The new Active trim level is available on both Ford Transit Custom and Ford Tourneo Custom models and is designed to appeal to customers who require a vehicle with a large carrying capacity for their ‘active’ lifestyles. The Active trim takes the same design inspirations as the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus Active, gaining black wheelarch cladding, black side skirts, a mesh grille and black trim for the front and rear bumpers, this look is completed by roof rails and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The front wings and tailgate of the van get Active branding, on the interior, part-leather seats and gloss black interior are added to the van. Ride height for the Active models remains unaltered, however you are able to add an mLSD limited slip-differential for an extra cost, this is designed to offer better traction in slippery conditions, without impacting on fuel economy or emissions.

Active Trim is available in standard and long wheelbase Ford Transit Custom panel van and double cab models but only in standard roof height, it is also available in eight-seat, standard wheelbase Ford Tourneo Custom models.

Along side the new trim level, Ford have also developed a range of accessories for the Active range. These include bike carriers which fit into the seat runners of the Tourneo Custom and internal and external carriers for other lifestyle equipment. The Ford Transit Custom Trail is available with a range of Ecoblue diesel engines with 130ps, 170ps and 185ps outputs in standard or 48v mild-hybrid guise, manual and automatic transmissions are available.

Ford Transit Custom Trail and Ford Transit Trail

The Trail specification for both the Ford Transit Custom and Ford Transit vans comprises of a chunky makeover aimed at business users. Both models receive black plastic lower body cladding, black alloy wheels and a black grille with large Ford lettering in the same style as that found on the Ford Ranger Raptor pickup truck.

The Ford Transit Custom Trail is also available with roof rails and running boards to enhance the off-road appearance. The most obvious upgrade inside the vans is the addition of black leather trim, which is easier to clean as well as offering more luxury and comfort, also included in the specification is air conditioning, power folding mirrors, a quickclear windscreen and automatic lights.

Underneath the skin of the new vans, there’s still two-wheel drive and a standard ride height, all-season tyres have been made available, whilst the mLSD mechanical limited slip differential is fitted to the vans as standard.

If you require even more traction, the Ford Transit Trail is also available in four-wheel drive, this system sends power to the rear wheels of the van in standard conditions, but is able to send up to 50 percent of that power to the front axle of the van if required. The four-wheel drive offering does not affect the carrying capacity of the Ford Transit van when comparing it to standard rear-wheel drive models, there’s also a drive mode controller on the dashboard of the van which allows you to choose between Mud/Rut and Slippery modes, as well as a 50:50 diff lock for conditions where there is extremely poor grip offered.

The Trail trim level is available on every body style option in the Ford Transit Custom van range, so there are two lengths, two roof heights and five-seater double cab in-van (also two lengths) to choose between. On the full-size Transit van, the Trail specification is available in L2 and L3 lengths and H2 and H3 roof heights, there is also a double cab in-van version available
